I'm not sure which issue in particular you are talking about - do you mean the difference between the UK and Great Britain? Because as I mentioned earlier, I wouldn't expect "foreigners" (for lack of a better term) to understand that difference, and I don't think anyone would get angry about it.

No they are completely different things. Great Britain is just the island which does not include any part of the isle of Ireland. The United Kingdom is the political union which includes northern Ireland.

I've never heard a strong reaction to the term "british isles" from an irish person. There is generally a preference to refer to the isle of ireland, but that's obviously narrowing things down.

Actually at the beginning we were talking about foreigners understanding that Scotland isn't in england, much like wales and england aren't the same thing. It just evolved into a more general discussion about geographical terms and definitions in the United Kingdom.

I don't have a problem saying that I'm English - I tend to use British or English interchangeably to be honest. To me it's just a question of precision rather than any sort of national pride.
