Plus there seems to be this attitude that a movie DEPICTING something means it CONDONES it, which obviously is not the case.

Well there was the 1990 remake of Night of The Living Dead (which is totally underrated) but that stuck to the farmhouse in the woods setting, as far as a city overrun with zombies I think you’re right, that hadn’t been seen in a movie since Day of The Dead.
Yeah, it’s decent, but the second one is Uwe Boll level terrible, I never bothered with any of the others.
It’s all photoshop but it’s still not as bad as it used to be, they no longer just slap some disembodied heads on there and call it a day.
