Not to mention the sorts that only use it to make jokes, said in the same manner as someone as used to derisively calling people, shall we say, bundles of sticks.

I can’t help but wonder about the social lives of people who insist every close relationship in media must be romantic or sexual in nature (i.e. every shipping fandom in history). It’s like they’re completely incapable of recognizing platonic relationships whatsoever.
LOTR being included bums me out because it was written with a complete lack of sexuality. The very root of the relationships is non-sexual love and admiration for each other.
It’s no concern of mine if someone wants to think characters are gay if that enhances their enjoyment of the films or books, but by Eru I got tired of being told that Sam and Frodo OBVIOUSLY wanted to fuck and I must be in denial to claim otherwise. It’s as if the very idea of non-sexual love between adults is a threat…
Back when I was a kid, there was this old, really cranky guy who owned this small video-rental store. The store was barely more than a big closet and crammed absolutely full of movies all the way from the floor to the ceiling, and the old fart really couldn’t have cared less about who rented what; perhaps needless to…
You can thank Spielberg for PG-13. That summer Temple of Doom and Gremlins came out and after some outrage from people about Gremlins not being a PG movie, SS advocated for a new category to fill in between PG and R.
According to the graph, 20 years ago almost TWICE as many people lived in grinding poverty than they do now. Things are objectively better in virtually every country on planet earth than they were 20 years ago.
::massive eye roll::
These lists are a great reminder that, no matter why depressing nonsense you read on the internet, we are literally living in the best time to be alive as a human being IN HUMAN HISTORY. That is, things have NEVER BEEN BETTER. Are things perfect? No. But claims about “wow, the world is so fucked and terrible” shows a…
I’m probably ignorant here, but I think at least in the US, the system is not in great shape but it still contains the means to be corrected by the people without violence. Obviously that doesn’t happen unless the people make changes intentionally, but I think it’s still possible.
Who knows what’ll happen tomorrow, but I don’t think Texas limiting ballot drop boxes takes the US off the list of democracies just yet.
I bought a house, got married and had a kid all within 12 months on a total income of $32k a year. This was not too long ago mind you. I saved a ton of money to afford a nonpayment, which meant no fancy dinners, vacations, and new cars. I went with a 15 year loan on a $32k salary! That ate up pretty much all of our…
Reading your comment has renewed my hope that we have a chance! Been renting the same Townhouse for 7 years, and my Landlord said when I moved in they would never raise my rent. They never did but I also raised my own rent by 100 a month because, well duh. Every Townhouse in my neighborhood now is going for 6 to 7…
I have no defense of corporate landlords but back in the day I chose that over renting from an individual. Option A was corporate owned modern high-rise with elevator, doorman, live in super, roof deck and gym. Option B was a crappy walkup for $50 less a month because that was the “going rate” according to the owner.
I’m going to weigh in from the other side. I live in FL now, but I still own a house in Maine. To defray costs, I rent it to a couple of guys - one was my long-term roommate when I lived there, the other a Craigslist find. So I am “the landlord” to my two tenants. I give them a really, really good deal on the rent. “Ma…
Not sure how it is in the US, but in the U.K. average yield for landlords is about 4%
I get people hating landlords, especially the corporate landlords and the individuals with multiple units in poor repair.
I have been very fortunate, my landlord has been really cool. When I moved in, I told him that he would only hear from me if I couldn’t fix a problem myself. I’ve been here since 2004, he’s never raised my rent (which includes utilities). At the beginning of the pandemic, I voluntarily raised my rent to offset my…
This is a joke, right? This has to be a joke.
