Trouble is, I struggle to believe that a 20-gauge shell in a fairly short barrel would have more penetrative power than the balls — which were not subtle at .36, .40 or .42 calibre. Even if the shell was load with ‘buck-and-ball’, it would have quite a rapid spread pattern.

I think you meant “in vivo” which is usually used to indicate natural, not “in vitro” which would be ‘in the lab’. But even that’s not quite the situation; maybe “in utero”?

The ranged weapons have to be “real” at some point. How do we know? MiB fires a Le Mat revolver’s shotgun charge through an adobe wall & a host. Paintball pellets will not suffice there.

It adds complexity because you need to keep it stable; long objects spinning about their long axis tend to be unstable because the movement drifts with the slightest asymmetry. It’ll tumble without active control.
