It was a moral failure. She had no idea what had been said between Edith and Bertie. She wasn't even supposed to know about Marigold. If she really wanted to help, she would have talked to Edith privately. But where is the fun in that?

The "They're bragging." exchange was my favorite part of the movie. It summed up the whole economic clusterfuck in a few seconds.
