“Take your mint and be grateful for it, peasant! Remember, there are adjuncts out there who would kill for your mint!”
TIL, Kate has never been to Michigan where every supermarket has these for cans.
Cookies are out due to budget cuts. Have a mint.
My first thought
We have tons and tons of bottle return machines in Oregon. I assumed they were nationwide.
Deadlines and imagination block are a boring combination.
I was using them in California by at least ‘92.
I read that and rolled my eyes so hard. I’m an academic and it seemed like 100% bullshit to me. Somehow, someway, I’ve managed to (I hope) push my students to realize their potential without, you know, sleeping with them. Where’s my cookie?
We’ve had these in NY for years. I don’t know if they have them down in NYC. If you aren’t from a state with a returnables fee on bottles and cans, I can understand why you wouldn’t be aware of them. I hate the ones that reject brands the store doesn’t carry.
Have you seriously never seen a bottle deposit machine? Really?
This is academia, “A place where deep and lasting collegial bonds are formed, where mentors and protégés can become close friends and where young lives are transformed by a galvanic encounter with knowledge and their own latent capabilities,” as Laura Miller wrote in a 2015 essay for the New Republic
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Uhhhh
Why would they? Where would that information come from in the first place?
I think it was Sovereign Syre I heard on a podcast talk about how she went to college early and did everything right to be a “good” girl (was a virgin, dressed modestly, studied hard) and was still sexually harassed by a college professor. It really highlighted that,as a woman, you can NEVER be “good” enough. Like…
110% this. I recently graduated from undergrad, so my exposure to research mentoring/relationships is limited. I went in as a non traditional student in my late 20s with a decade of work and other grownup things under my belt. I know a lot of people who had a wonderful, fulfilling, and useful experience working in a…
Academia has so many skeletons in its closet it’s a wonder the closet hasn’t exploded. The whole system is set up to fundamentally exploit labor to an extent that’s mind boggling. Predatory sexual behavior is sadly but one of the many consequences, none of which are likely to be curbed anytime soon.
