One of my dearest friends split from her husband in her late 30's and spent a few years dating 'just to see what's out there'. She had a few misfires, but kept herself in the fray and eventually met a wonderful man - they've been extremely happy for the past 2 years.

Hmm. Re: showing a strong, smart woman who just IS that way... that might apply if that was the general presentation of Mellie's character (like, say, a CJ Cregg or a Miranda Bailey). But her cunning, sly and conniving characteristics kind of undercut her being an example of strength and intelligence, no?
