It was more about the revolutionary cinematic techniques and moving the medium forward. Thankfully not much racism going on in Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros is more like Birth of A Nation. Kane changed the rules, just like Ocarina (along with Super Mario 64) changed the rules for 3D gaming.

The Big Mac is not critically acclaimed, you need a film that is both popular and critically acclaimed for your analogy, like Pulp Fiction for instance.

Actually, there are sites that compile all the lists of Best games of All Time, and Ocarina of Time is by far the number one game cited. That's not to say that it's the greatest game of all time, or that it's perfect, but it's a must play game. It's the Citizen Kane of video games.

By the way, did you guys know that Dario Argento is the biggest creative influence on Metroid's creator?

Yeah, Prime has so many hidden items, and they are quite hard to find.

Got to have all of them energy tanks.

Well, don't go to comic con, then.

Well, I guess it's like that hard guitar chord, after a lot of practise it gets to be second nature. Still, I don't know if I could dedicate that much time to learn to master an optional control for one single game, not matter how good it is.

I can see that, but they really worked for me. I'm usually the person who dismisses any kind of motion controlled gameplay, so I know where you're coming from.

I'm sure the pros are sneering at this, but what I love about most Nintendo games, is that the controls are flawless and you can master the basics really fast. If there is one issue with Super Metroid, for me, it's the controls. They are mostly great, but wall jumps, weapon selection and a couple of aiming issues

Yeah, Zero Suit Samus also comes to mind as a serious misstep. *Cue the angry replies from gamers who feel insulted because they've just enjoyed "sexy" Samus on a very primal level.* The fact is that a person can both enjoy the outfits, and also understand that it's sexist and backwards. My point would be that Samus

I think you did a great job of explaining how and why the series works. I hope game creators read and take this piece to heart. I think Nintendo has mostly done a good job of letting the gameplay and level design tell the story, throughout the years. But Other M is an example of Nintendo listening to reviewers, and

It would, The controls for the prime games are so much better with the wii controls, and that's coming from someone who thinks the wii controls are useless gimmicks 95% of the time. Notable exceptions would be Metroid Prime Trilogy, Pikmin 1 & 2 for wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2.

When on earth are they releasing Metroid Zero Mission for WiiU in North America? I want to play it on my TV.

This reminds me that Nintendo has been fairly incredible at transitioning their series to 3D games, compared to other developers, I mean Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Metroid Prime pretty much wrote the book on how to do that successfully.

"The most obvious flaws—repetitive action and an intrusive story that
reduced Samus to a passive, needy twerp—are troubling, but even without
those elements, the game would still be a failure."

I agree, I also think the controls are much better than in Super Metroid. The wall jumps in Super Metroid are kind of criminally difficult to learn.

Metroid: Other M is basically the Star Wars Episode 1-3 of the series. There is a reason why you don't explain mysteries, myths and legends. This series was never story driven, it baffles me that such smart developers wouldn't get that.

So true, I mean it's not even close. Don't get me wrong, there were some great games on the Genesis, for its time, but the Snes has a huge chunk of the greatest games of all time. Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World & Yoshi's Island, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Kart, Star Fox, Donkey
