Glenn is the consistently moral good guy who can't really be replaced by any other existing character at the moment. Daryl is also "good", but not to the extent that he could replace Glenn.

I think that now the author is no longer involved in making the series and directing the storyline, a lot of the stuff in the books will be redundant. They've also caught up and even surpassed many of the book character's storylines from the books - or altered them to the point that it's quite a different story now…
