Well this is disturbing. One small point, finning is illegal in US waters. Since 2010 when the Shark Conservation Act was passed, fishers have been required to land both the fins and the carcass, which they can then sell.

I agree. I don't think they've linked any of the food to autism, but a lot of kids with autism also suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, according to the article I linked. Also from the article:

I don't know if it is so much of a thing as it is a parent trying anything and everything to help their child. I think she's had him on this type of diet for a few years (according to my two minute google search) so hopefully it is working for their family.

Just to add to your side note - my sister and her wife used a cloth delivery service with their son when he was an infant, and it didn't end up costing them much more than if they had gone with regular diapers. The service drops off clean diapers and picks up bags of dirty diapers. Super easy!!
