Personally, I think the iPhone 4 was released a month too early...since they were loosing sales on 3GS.
Even though they were running Win CE, as do many other machines out there, this had to do with a poorly designed custom firmware that ran on top of Win CE, so blame the manufacturer...
Um...a single speaker? Seriously? If I was designing this, I would add the other speaker on the back...
Just buy a nice pair of Sennheiser HD 5XX or 6XX, and be happy...
