1) Well, directing a movie is harder work than directing a TV show — that's just a simple fact (have you ever seen or read any behind-the-scenes stories from ANH?? Your post would seem to indicate otherwise. Dude almost died).

I think the only time I ever liked it was in Fight Club.
Yeah, I'm with ya — I think the real key to the M&S interpersonal chemistry is that they both prioritize cerebral professionalism over their emotional desires, which is backdoor-smexy in a very clever (and probably repressed) sorta way.
The series has always been episodic in nature, and shows have been broadcast "out of production order" since literally the invention of the television.
"And I don't want them to get the kid in the end, because really, what good would that do?"
So you like XF because it doesn't play out "like a film" (unlike TD), but watching XF is so great because it's like watching a "mini-movie?"
I think the primary culprit here is the incredibly short run, which has put an incredible amount of pressure — however self-imposed it may be — on Carter and his homies to deliver all diverse looks and feels the show had during its original run (although I still feel like this could have worked if everyone's work was…

Errr…the vast majority of those episodes are definitely not very highly-regarded in the circles I travel in (I guess you have a different experience, though, so fair enough).
If you haven't watched Morgan's "Jose Chung's From Outer Space," I do think that is the "better version" of this installment (thematically, that is…as far as subject matter it trolls the UFO mythology of the show instead of MotW).
"Morgan and Wong wrote only 15 episodes, many of which have been forgotten (the bad ones)."
"Lucas has written and directed exactly one acclaimed movie from his own franchise and let others do the best work for it."
