John Wayne supposedly hated Brando for reasons unrelated to this so I suspect he would have done the same.

While an apology is certainly appropriate, both to Ms. Littlefeather and to Native Americans in general, 50 years seems like too little too late.

I feel like every time I hear a John Wayne anecdote it just paints a clearer and clearer picture of what a viciously petty and self important child he was.

Do you think the crowd/academy would have felt free to be so awful if Brando had been physically present? I wonder. I understand his reason for not going, but boy did they illustrate the point literally in fine fashion.

I don’t see anything in the article implying that they’re comparable... the connection is that she got the threat in response to her tweeting that she was upset about the attack on Rushdie.

This is all true. I’ve spent 10 years trying make conservatives in this county happy, and we’re a small local paper. We don’t really do “politics” except in letters to the editor, but holy shit, if we don’t run the 2-page biography of whatever speaker the local Republican party has at their yearly dinner, we’re

Bold Prediction:  It’s going to fall short of the target, the recount won’t happen, but no money will be refunded, and she will suddenly disappear from social media for a time.  Trump taught them a few things, and “grift of the true believer” was lesson #1.

They want to blow $275k to recount an lection they already lost? Fine by me!

To be the party that pulls themselves up by their own bootstraps, they seem to want others to pay for a lot of their stuff.

Legally, Kansas requires a recount if anyone files for it and puts forth the entire cost. So this is not a matter of them humoring the crazy person. Though, yes it is clearly the ranting of the crazy person.

Yeah, grifters gonna grift and Cult 45 members getting suckered for their money is OK with me. What’s not OK is the continued attempts to undermine democracy. “Elections have consequences” - but only when the people who lose elections accept their defeat and work to convince more people that their ideas are the right

Yeah, exactly. Spend your cash and spin your wheels, dummies!

I am weirdly OK with them wasting their money on this than other damaging things.

Shit, as long as they (a) pay me in cash and (b) don’t prevent the enforcement of the result, I’ll recount the votes myself.

Let them waste their money. That’s 275 grand that won’t go to other anti-abortion efforts that are more effective at blocking access to abortion.

Quite right. It’s definitely interesting how newsrooms, both on TV and in print, love a bit of bothsides-ism, but only about certain issues, and those certain issues correspond extremely closely with typical centre-right white male viewpoints. It’s absolutely infects the whole of the US media, including the

“Objectivity” in modern American media means never asking a follow up question of conservatives while shouting down any inconvenient fact that challenges the broad status quo. It is why the supposed “Fact Checker” at a prestigious paper like the Washington Post can call factually true statements by Bernie Sanders

It’s also because, to a troubling degree, “fairness” has become more important in newsrooms than truth*. When I worked in newsrooms in the early aughts, one of the most frustrating things was how the higher-ups (editors and to a smaller degree publishers) frequently insisted upon including a perspective we knew to be

That’s because newsrooms are still full of white men. As far as they’re concerned, pregnancy and abortion are women’s issues that do not affect them.

To some conservatives....exist.
