I am not obese and was healthy prior to my last pregnancy but experienced a blood pressure spike that required an emergency induction to avoid preeclampsia. I was lucky enough to have good healthcare providers who caught it and prevented a tragedy. But not all American women are as lucky. Serena Williams is in amazing

It’s a bad faith argument though. Yes obesity can complicate pregnancy. But he’s trying to argue away the US’s awful maternity mortality rate as “individual cases”. Which is ridiculous. Focusing on individual factors does not excuse the overall rate. His whole argument seems to dance around “it’s your own fault if you

Yeah, he could simply have stopped at “I’m not a physician....” and then STFU.

Yeah, but look at Serena Williams. One of the greatest athletes in recorded history and she very nearly died in childbirth. This politician is talking out of his ass with no nuance.

Hey dumbass. You know what kills a LOT of women in places without appropriate access to abortion and pre, peri, and post natal care? PREGNANCY you fuckwad.

I think the issue is that obesity is such a wide ranging term and the BMI scale we use to define it is outdated and flat out wrong.

“I’m not a physician—”

“I’m not a physician, so I’ll just stop right there”

Reposting this here, I know Jez has been overrun with trolls recently, several are already posting about obesity. And yes, it can complicate pregnancy, but it’s not what’s behind the US’s appallingly high maternal mortality rates. Our health care system basically ignores common and obvious signs of pregnancy

Except he is wrong, because he’s suggesting that is the only reason for the maternal mortality rates in the US, and that pregnancy is not otherwise dangerous. Which is objectively false.

The only acceptable conclusion to any sentence that starts with “I’m not a physician, scientist, woman, person of color, etc...” is “...so I’m just going to shut the fuck up and listen to someone who is.”

Anytime one of these hateful, republican fascists says, “I’m not a physician...”. Everyone around him should just scream, “Then shut the fuck up!”. As a matter of fact, they should always shut the fuck up.

What a fucking coward. It says everything about that party that he won’t admit what he is actually for

Heh, I love that Norm/Perry story from SNL.

In the immortal words of Norm Macdonald:

Wow. It’s almost like the GOP understands that any right-wing expression of opinion on abortion will further alienate their politicians from the electorate.

I hope Abrams doesn’t end up being another hypercompetent person running for political office who never gets to hold an office where she could effect the positive change she wants to, but if that’s the case she may want to consider leaving Georgia, because no amount of valid questions like this will change these

Did he do it with a thick Kennedy accent and call her “Meyer?”

The entire hate-mongering GOP and MAGA crowd have literally become the embodiment of the vulgar toxic 80's frat house mentality.
