I think the big issue w/ trail mpg is that engines aren’t working at their optimal rpm. Driving 5mpg and then have to stop, idle, cut some trees, move forward 50 feet, stop, idle, ad infinitum eats up a lot of fuel. A hybrid would be able to store extra energy and reduce idling and running out of optimum mpg.
