I believe that the armorer makes the gun available for anyone on set who would like to inspect it. This is in addition to that person and the AD checking it before being handed to actors.

Further info on the play: The Laramie Project is about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder (Shepard was pistol-whipped, beaten, tortured and left for dead) was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws…

Curious about the teaching materials. I did a production of The Laramie Project in the early 2000s (albeit at a predominately white college). A worksheet about language and slurs could be appropriate…
