... except that VZW apparently blocks VPN use on 4G, and you have to pay $500 for an NAT unrestricted IP address. I tried to use PIA on my VZW phone since I already pay for it, and according to their support, the restricted IP on VZW's 4G keeps the VPN from connecting.

I get the point. At least for me on Verizon, Hangouts requires *data* to send messages. MMS messages also need data. But SMS doesn't use data.
