Surprisingly, autopilot/automatic system are very good at their programmed tasks, and very very very bad at anything out of their parameters. And it’s not realist to program them for every potential scenario, while a human can adjust on the fly to pretty much everything.

Just as an FYI, the word Indian is used as a non-pejorative term by a number of current historians, such as Charles C. Mann and David J. Silverman.

Well, it would depend on the place, wouldn’t it? I’ve dealt with a few mom and pop places that were cash only, no big deal. Usually they are at farmers markets or flea markets.

My local post office won’t accept a credit card with “ask for id” written in the signature block. They even have an official looking sign posted on the wall. I never did understand their logic.

True, it sounds old fashioned, but in my mind the smaller the footprint on the web, the less likely to be compromised. And my wife (who handles these things) can always pick up the phone and check for info regarding charges if the statement hasn’t arrived.

I’ll just put in my two cents (hah!) and mention our philosophy. My wife and I (going on 39 years now) decided never to use ATM cards nor even to have them. Also no debit cards. I installed it and so far it doesn’t seem to have screwed up what I use Facebook for, which is to check the newsfeeds from the video game sites I follow. But we’ll see, it’s still early days. Now I’ll go to Amazon and order, say, a walrus and see if I get ads for walrus obedience schools or walrus Easter outfits.
