Boxer engines can definitely take abuse if designed correctly. See the Mezger engine.

The redline is there because that’s where the engineers put it. Engines are designed to safely go to that point, or they are supposed to be. An engine that cannot survive being redlined is a poorly designed engine.

The IMS bearing issue affects less than 10% of cars that used that engine, so...
