I mean, it’s highly subjective but it seems (to me, but I am an outsider) that a fair amount of yoga practitioners get caught up in the ‘eastern mystisicm’ thing & start wearing bindis and henna and all sorts of other forms of cultural appropriation.

Okay, I’ll bite - how is applying henna cultural appropriation?

Yeah, definitely. I mean, there are probably ways in which someone could do yoga and have it be iffy, like if the white teacher was wearing a bindi and engaging in the more religious end of it without actually being Hindu. But the stretching-type yoga they have at the rec center is not appropriation, anymore than…

I agree, the whole point of this complaint was to showboat their moral superiority. Of which there is none.

The person who wrote this is a moron with too much time and no sense of proportion or common sense. Nobody complained to her about the cultural insensitivity of practicing yoga. Nobody. She made that up to be able to piss on the yoga instructor in feigned moral superiority. Some people just really enjoy ruining things…

Precisely my thoughts. There’s cultural appropriation but there’s also cultural exchange and the latter is amazing and beneficial for everyone. I think yoga, in general, is an example of the latter.

Have we reached a point where all cultural sharing is off limits? That seems so... stagnant.
