No, that's actually a new thing for this year. The LED's are hooked up to a proximity sensor. If the car is within a foot of the wall, they flash to tell the judges that their line is good. Sometimes that's really obvious, but often it's not, and the sensor adds a thin veneer of objectivity to a very subjective sport.
