VW were even more cynical and used the same stalk as the intermitent equiped higher spec versions but on my Vanagon and just put a peice of plastic to stop you moving the stalk and altered a relay to stop intermitent on the lower spec.

Subaru get top safety ratings in their class however and manage to keep good sightlines.

Have a VW T3Vanagon Van based Campervan. No intermittent wipers. Except the intermittent are there VW just blocked them out on the cheaper versions with a small piece of plastic on the base model wiper stalk and change the wiper relay module in the fusebox. $10 later I have adjustable intermittent wipers!
