For me the wagon would be the go. I always thought Volvos are designed as longroofs first with the sedan being an afterthought.

Don’t forget Black Gold!
Thats the ones! I always wanted to put a Toyota Lexcen badge on a SS Commodore just to mess around with the purists.
TBH even the first Holden was just a copy of a USA GM car. the whole business model was just slapping badges on things.
Don’t forget the Holden versions of the 4wd Suzuki Sierra and Ignis! but that could have been later..
My second car in 1999 was exactly this rare Santos Green colour VW Golf Mk1 that looked very similar to a Porshe 911 colour. Haven’t seen another one for years. until a couple of years ago I saw exactly the same colour Golf nochantly driving through Tokyo while I was photographing architecture like I had walked into…
Miata for 80% as well with overlap
A roof box would be an excellent accessory for your road trip and a solar panel / lithium battery (even just one of those portable battery starter packs) make a great companion for your on the road blogging. please don’t throw those lovely passenger seats in the trash to make space for your sleeping platform. Also can…
Got to say that optics are unfortunately everything. Give that car a good detail and polish before you take it in to inspection. It takes your car from being deathtrap that you drive because you can’t afford anything else to eccentric retro car that you are looking after (which you are) in eyes of not only the law but…

The Australian version of this is now pretty popular. Weighs less than 1000kg, 100kw engine that is one of Toyota’s best. (the 4age was based on the ford cosworth engine) it’s a poor mans GTi. That gearbox will last another 100,000 miles. Buy it and learn to double clutch and don’t give a crap what anyone thinks.…
How about a Ctroen Picasso?
Edit I see you mention it below.
Just be known that whatever way you go with your automotive shitbox wrenching obsession issue we will follow you. Don’t worry about your audience! I’d be hoping for at least Betamax quality at that price!
Crime rate in Japan would barely justify a removable faceplate though.
Free Murilee!
I love a Rasheen, saw a lot of them in the frozen north of Japan in the early 2000's. I chased one down in my home town of Melbourne Australia and genuinely freaked out the Japanese owner with trying to buy it from them.
Where is your proof that this even happens! You must be a pretty anxious person if you even believe this bullshit.
Firstly a lot of the protesters are “average people”
There are plenty of videos online with the “average Joe” being held up by protests and just waiting for the protesters to pass. No one is getting pulled…
