Sounds like a nice breezy beach read.

Bell argues that humanity is guilty of the original sin of attempting to tame nature and refusing to acknowledge that some things should be left untouched.

Yeah, I took my sons to BB2 yesterday as well. I was hoping I’d at least get a chance to take a nap in the theater but everything about it was obnoxious and I just ended up doing a hate-watch. At least I used the Fandango gift card I got for Father’s Day so I saved $25.  The only upside is that Amy Sedaris got herself

Forgive me for being the opposing view here, but I saw this as kind of purposefully done. Like, this entire production was supposed to mimic the whole cheap romance novel cover that this show is based on.

Isn’t everything?

Upvoted for "pernicious mission drift" alone.

And why say something in a sentence or two when you can drag it out over several long-winded paragraphs chock full of $5 words?

Freedom was the WORST! It’s like he doesn’t know how human beings work (especially women).

Right? So poorly written, yet so intriguing.

Fuuuuuuck Franzen. I was waiting to see him in the comments. The Corrections alone has to be, like, half of this list, but I honestly can’t remember because I’ve blocked most of it from my mind.

I mean, some of that is because if a female author includes even one reference to a relationship, it’s “romance” writing, and any work exploring the lives of women is “chick lit” - both terms that instantly turn off many readers from exploring the work, even if it’s not remotely what those two terms conjure up in

You just described Garden State!

You just described why I hated The Artist and why I thought it really won for Best Picture.

Two memories this stirred in me:

For anything in written in the last hundred years my least favorite book is, “I’m an alienated modern middle to upper class (white) man, simultaneously propped up by and yet saddened by the very systems that were specifically designed to benefit me at the expense of all others. I harbor a secret self-loathing and despa

It doesn’t help when 3/4 women listed in that quote get described as an author of romance novels when googled. Then you look at the 4 men listed and each one can appeal to a different interest. Possible but I doubt it, there could be a bias in woman authors leaning heavily towards romance novels. I think more likely

I think if men are mature (in every sense) readers, they are quite willing to read female authors. Three of my husband’s favorite authors are Zadie Smith and Jennifer Eagan and Atwood. I must admit his taste - in books at least - are quite a bit more highbrow than mine! I’ll read just about anything, from prize

Have you ever seen a man recoil at needing to hold a woman’s purse for literally 10 seconds while she puts on a jacket? Imagine this person choosing to spend 400 pages inhabiting a woman’s thoughts.

Why do you think she published under her initials? Why do you think she published under the name Robert Galbraith, instead of simply using another pen name if she wished to keep her identity secret at the time?

I have read all these books, most of them by Hemmingway.
