Sounds like what Zimbardo did was what happens in real life. Create a system built around sadism, and sadistic people are selected to be a part of it. I've seen this happen at jobs with really screwed up cultures, and I'm preetty sure Zimbardo wasn't hanging out behind the scenes pulling the strings.
