The most glaring one is the otherwise beautiful shot of the unit crossing a field at night illuminated by distant artillery fire. You make a good point with the structural awkwardness of the scene—definitely something that the editor should have taken care of. (Michael Kahn, Spielberg's longtime editor, is IMO one of the most overrated guys in the cutting room. Some of his errors in Saving Private Ryan were maddeningly atrocious.)

Let's be real: the human dialogue is the weakest part of the whole affair (outside of the ghastly Flesh Fair, which was 100% Spielberg's creation). Don't blame Frances O'Connor for lines that Meryl Streep couldn't sell.

Thanks so much for this well-written article. I have maintained since its release that A.I. is one of the most misunderstood (and bleakest) films ever made.

The Bridge was a decent show that had a great show constantly trying to break out of it. But poor creative decisions killed it.
