Cool concept. Not within my purview as a family man and a homeowner.

Holy CRAP I wish I could remember this. My office looks like Hoarders:Microcenter Edition.
The studies in question have what appears to be a single common flaw. They don’t track ad libitum calorie intake over time. A “diet” or a “diet + exercise” program must be maintained over time. It is not surprising to me that a single instance of exercise vs ad libitum feeding doesn’t produce a dramatic result. I…
Love Pixelmator. I used it almost exclusively before Adobe released the $9.99/mo combined Lightroom/Photoshop package. I still install Pixelmator and use it for some tasks as a somewhat lighter alternative to Photoshop. I love the presentation, and it’s very fast and intuitive.
I’ve always been a fan of Kershaw blades, but I like lots of different knives. My EDC is a Benchmade - I’m surprised they didn’t make the cut here. Still, I can’t disagree with the decision of the Hive Mind. That’s a nice blade.
I know, right? :D I’ve carried a Benchmade for years; never had a better knife.
I do care very much about the environmental impact of manufactured fertilizers and a long sequence of pesticides, and that’s why I tend to buy “the dirty dozen” with the organic label. I do absolutely agree that buying local is the best solution, but buying local organic is in fact better - that is, all the local…
It’s easy to make unsupported accusations. I’m perfectly willing to change my opinions based on facts. I presented one example that shows that the organic label is not trivial or useless. If you can demonstrate that the USDA allows the organic label to be used on food plants that have been sprayed with neonicotinoid…
“Organic” doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. A blanket statement such as yours is simply incorrect. The fact that the USDA made a standard for “organic” that isn’t particularly useful doesn’t mean that the only possible use of the word is the USDA’s standard, or that the USDA standard is irrelevant. For…
There’s a good point here - that is, if you care about the environment, you have to do more than just look for a label. You’ve got to do actual research.

I tend to buy the packs of various length wires that terminate in the rigid lead for these breadboards. No, it doesn’t end up looking that neat, but it works. Now the proto boards are a different issue (the ones with the solder leads laid out like the breadboard). I cut ‘em this way.
This is good advice. Keep a running list of the tasks on your plate and whenever someone wants you to add something, *require them to prioritize it*. Then there’s no BS about “Where is item X?”
My kid’s in eighth grade and has taken some sort of standardized tests every year since first grade. She (and we) have gotten the results of every test, and the school district has put a lot of time into her and her friends that also score very well on the tests. It’s guided her class schedule and her opportunities…
Nah, I’m with you. I’ve got one of those 27” 2560x1440 monitors as my main display, a 23” in a vertical role to the left, and a 24” cCinema Display off to the right. Virtual Machines go on the right monitor, documentation on the left monitor, terminals and active documents go on the middle monitor. +1 for the idea of…
I really want the Parallax Propeller-powered flight control board. Mostly because I’m familiar with the Propeller (c/c++) and would like to experiment with autonomous flight systems. The Elev-8 is ~$550, I think (parallax’s canned propeller-powered quad), though I’ve considered picking up a ‘kit’ from Ebay and buying…
There are a lot of factors. If I take time off, it makes more work for me, and significantly increases my stress level. That’s because I’ve got my fingers in *all* of the pies, and when I take them out for a while, other people stick theirs in and fuck things up. Which doesn’t help *me*, because I’m the hub.
But then fear couldn’t be used to drive the economy, and the funding of all the “wars on x”. What are you THINKING? Do you HATE AMERICA? /s
Good stuff. I use vJournal (which saves to an evernote notebook) but I have used DayOne in the past, another good solution.
I agree, Patrick. There is an opportunity cost to being a ‘Jack of All Trades’, but there is a much lower risk. You can paint yourself into a corner with excessive specialization, when your specialty becomes obsolete. And life is more fun, IMO, as a “jack of all trades”. My ‘hobbies’ have made me considerable money…
