I might be wrong about this, but the ships themselves were discovered after the book was written (book published in 2007, boats discovered in 2014 and 2016). Both were found intact and well preserved. I suspect that’s why they didn’t have him burn the ship.

I think the Tuunbaq doesn’t have to be supernatural to be effective and I get the impression that the show might have gone back and forth on this as the story developed. It differs quite a bit from the book.

Loved this show. My only quibble is with construction of the bear, which always looked more like a troll on four legs than a bear. It’s 2017 (at the time). They should be able to make a bear look like a bear. But tearing Hickey in half made me feel better about troll-bear so let’s call it even.

On the one hand I’m going to miss this show terribly. However on the other hand. I don’t think I could have taken much more misery.

I spent a lot of time wondering what Hickey’s plan was, but I think ultimately he didn’t have one once his dreams of getting to Oahu were dashed. I think Hickey’s reason for kidnapping Crozier was simply to take revenge for leading them into this mess, plus whatever rush he could get off dehumanizing him and showing

This unsettled me more than the slaughter of Hickey’s people, which was just, uh “regular” horrible. There’s something to be said about horror that’s never adequately explained, and that bit absolutely nailed it.

I’ve already mentioned, I think maybe replying to you elsewhere in these comments, that I broke down a little bit when Silence saw Goodsir’s corpse.

I believe it said it was 2 years later that the search party showed.

Great, but depressing show. Probably one of the most depressing endings for me since The Mist. I do have to say the CG monster was pretty bad throughout the series. It makes me wish it was t part of the show cause it kind of took me out of the moment when it was on screen. But there should be a bunch of nominations

Way better than that bonkers ending to the book.

Sean: First of all, thank you for your sensitive, thoughtful, often poetic reviews of this series. I doff my (wholly inappropriate for the Arctic) hat to you.

Ah yes, the ‘long-forgotten, lonely cairn of stones’. And the note that...escalates quickly.

That was an intensely horrifying moment and seeing those huge chunks taken out of him.

Very nicely stated recap and analysis, Sean, of a fantastic series that is even better than the book it’s based on. However, I have one quibble with your recap: your apparent assumption of Lady Silence/Silna’s sooner rather than later death.

The stuff in the survivor camp was probably what I had the most questions about - what the hell happened to the bloke with the chains in his face? Did he do that to himself in the madness of it?

Wouldn’t a Manitou make more sense?

The word ‘Close’ whispered by Little to Crozier, mirrors the same word said by Jopson to Crozier in the very first episode. This show will reward a thorough rewatch and I can’t really wait. Fantastic and beautiful.

I need to rewatch this show on a binge with no commercials. I just felt so many times that just when an emotional crescendo happened, fuckin boom buy insurance.

Did Silna die? I didn’t get that sense. We see her leave at night, and she is pulling a sled with supplies. “Alone is the way for her now” means that she cannot live with her people as a shaman, but I don’t think it means she must die.

Really wish I could unsee Goodsir’s half eaten corpse. Was one of the noblest, best men on the ship and that grotesque tableau being the last we see of him... i’m gutted.
