I must be missing something. It seems like the cars are worth more without the fixes or buy backs. If you don’t care about being “green”, keep the car, get good mileage and sell it later for a premium to someone else that does not need to be green.

You have the most logical explanation. I have made the mistake of thinking that autopilot was on and when the car started to drift I easily corrected it and realized that autopilot was off.
