I think the appeal is somewhat akin to that of religion: it provides a schema to make sense your place in a chaotic and uncaring universe.

I think the first FPS on the N64 with a workable control scheme for me was Turok, (which I think was move & strafe with the right d-pad, look around with the left stick, and shoot with the left trigger). I used that scheme on Goldeneye (maybe that was the "Solitaire" scheme?) and in Halo.

I think both of these things can be true to an extent. What a character is intended to be versus what hateful assholes - who are probably not real careful readers - take from them are two different things (cf. Archie Bunker, Pepe).
