In the 80s and 90s, I flew United enough that I could generally get upgraded to 1st class for free or $15-$25 each way. Flying was much nicer back then.

I have a United VISA card, so I get some perks even with a Basic ticket, including a free checked and carryon bag. I have also found that the upgrade from Basic to Standard can be cheaper for a card holder.
