That was my thought too:

I always found the really dark silhouette press photos of cars rather boring. You don’t really get an idea of what the car looks like. It’s like they’re trying to hide something. (sometimes rightly so I suppose)

It’s not just California. I believe the more populous parts of Oregon are the same thing.

I have to say though, sometimes worse cars are more fun. Cars are the most fun when driven on the limit, and if the limit is completely achievable, and predictable, it’ll be more fun.
