Conspiracy theory: This was completely intentional. The movie NEVER ACTUALLY HAD this version of Sonic in it. They created it only for the poster and for this trailer to get attention.

Especially if the character in question has endured based solely on the strength of their design.

I like to think that the director and producers went to the artists to tell them that they had to change the design, only for all of them to look at them with eyes of disdain that screamed “we fucking told you!”

I agree with one additional exception. The climatic scene with all the rockets is going to drag the film from mediocrity to disaster.

I finally watched the trailer yesterday, and besides the design of the character - which of course is not a small factor by any stretch - I really didn’t think it looked that bad.

Here’s an idea you can have for free, Hollywood...

When adapting a character or IP for film, if there are iconic characters who have a definitive design that, while perhaps revised over the years, has barely changed in decades...maybe don’t completely pervert that design kowing full-well you’re going to piss off all…

I actually liked Jim Carrey’s Robotnik, he really does remind me of Eggman in the genesis Sonic games, the OVA series (yeah, I watched it way back) and the sonic mania shorts.

@Platypus Man: I agree, but I am most impressed by the 1985 vector graphics! Man, vector graphics must have been the SHIT back then (I was too young to know). I mean compared to two years earlier on the 2600, it's night and day.

I think Rogue Leader did it the best. It was the first one where I think that the battle was rendered with enough detail for you to feel like you're really taking down the AT-ATs.
