The Electoral College was added to our system of government by our founding fathers to ensure there was a guard against tyranny (populous states like in today’s NY, CA) and mob rule (direct democracy).  Those are the only two arguments needed outside historical tradition.

The founding fathers owned slaves.  There is nothing in any source that I could agree with your assertion they were assholes.  The evidence may actually show otherwise.  They also designed our political system and foundations with such brilliance that the institution of slavery could be dismantled.  Which it was.
