I'm not sure where people get the idea that queer characters on TV are always white. Queer characters are significantly more likely than straight ones to be played by actors of color.

Alcohol is significantly more dangerous to quit than heroin. Heroin withdrawal is miserable, but it almost certainly won't kill you. Whereas alcohol withdrawal without medical supervision can easily kill you.
Among people in recovery, there's a common belief that it's dangerous to think of alcoholism as being somehow "different" from other addictions.
