‘grace personified’, ‘all class’ - I can’t believe that people would interpret events that way. Serena disgraced herself with an embarrassing display of entitled petulance whilst in the process of getting a bad beating on court.

And how exactly does any of that justify booing Naomi Osaka, who by all accounts seems to be an awesome person?
I may not have hit the nail on the head with my word choice here, I’ll admit, but I don’t think the article is balanced, it’s a puff job of Serena. She lost 6-2, 6-4, and this controversy happened in the second set. Wouldn’t it be more fair to say that Serena wasn’t feeling it today, wasn’t having her best match,…
Looked to me like Serena was frustrated because she was getting overpowered, where she’s usually the overpowering one. Osaka played great and was a force out there.
Gotta agree. Osaka outplayed her, no question. I feel bad she couldn’t enjoy this victory, because she earned it.
... She’s all class because her terrible behavior ruined Osaka’s first GS win, but she tried to make it somewhat better after the fact?
The umpire was right on all three of those calls. It sounds like Williams thought the “coaching” warning was rescinded because she told the umpire she’s not a cheater, but of course that’s not how that penalty works. The call is made against the coach (who admitted he was coaching from the stands), so the player can’t…
Serena stans are turning into psychopaths who froth at the mouth at every slight against her. Imagine being do deranged that you have to be told not to boo Naomi Osaka of all people. Serena’s the GOAT but I’m so done with her ridiculous fans.
Can we please stop with the Serena worship? She’s a titan of tennis, a superb athlete, but she’s not without flaws, without her faults. She’s petulant, and this isn’t the first or worst instance of abusing an official in her career.
Not out of line. Serena’s coach admitted to Pam Shriver that he was trying to coach Serena. Everyone, including Serena, knows how penalties are given out. Maybe it’s her coach’s fault for trying to signal to her, but she was responsible for her own behavior after that.
Here he is taking no crap from Novak
so when you go to court for a speeding ticket you going to tell them.. well other people speed all the time?
I felt so bad for her I was crying. Just like you said, imagine having your childhood dream come true and this shit hanging over it. Forever. I have total faith she'll go on to have a monster career, and I hope she'll be able to put this behind her.
I don’t think you need to worry about that.
yeah, she had Williams dead to rights from the opening serve. No-one forced Serena into those early double faults and wildly missed ground strokes.
don’t report what happened? ok.
I hope to God Naomi wins another major, because having a literal childhood dream come true —vs. Her childhood idol Serena, Center Court, US open finals, first Grand slam finals not only for yourself but for any woman for your country, and have it turn nightmare in this way is just horrid.
As someone who worked in a call center there's a difference between being mad and profanity and personal attacks. She totally deserved that 3rd code violation. 1st one is debateable.
Osaka was so far and away better today it wasn’t even funny. Her ability to step up and hit great shots serving up 5-4, after Williams stalled for forever complaining to the referees and the crowd showed their ass, was unbelievable.
This was so hard to watch. I hope Naomi Osaka knows she would have won this match on her own if all of this shit hadn’t happened.
