Call him a demagogue or a potential dictator or fascist all you want. The problem I have with the Hitler comparisons is that Hitler is so closely associated with genocide that is become hyperbolic.

The rhetoric of Trump and Hitler is a little bit different. Remain vigiliant but don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that there will be concentration camps for everyone except white men.

I don’t deny the similarities. I want us to remain vigilant. But it’s not honest to pretend there aren’t differences as well.

They don’t want to integrate orthodox Muslim immigrant women into the larger secular civic space. They also don’t want to integrate orthodox men who think it’s okay to beat their wife into the larger secular civic space.

No. A Hitler comparison leads to a very specific interpretation which includes genocide. A less hyperbolic comparison would be a comparisons to a demagogue or dictator.

It’s more complicated than that. Banning the burqa is sexist but the burqa is sexist as well.

No. Acknowledge the similarities all you want. Just don’t act like you know for a fact that Trump will become a dictator and create concentration camps etc.

I don’t have any problem with people talking about that there is potential for Trump to become a dictator or the next Hitler or whatever. It’s the people who think it has already happened or is guaranteed to happen that are clueless.

Because people think of the 1945 Hitler when Hitler comparisons are made. Besides, comparing Trump to the 1933 Hitler makes the implicit assumption that he will turn into the 1945 Hitler. Not every demagogue is literally Hitler.

I’m freaked out about him too. That’s why I think it’s unwise to make Hitler comparisons at this point in time because if he actually starts to do Hitler-like stuff people will find it easier to dismiss. Boy who cried wolf and all that.
