My problem with this isn’t the people blocking, it’s the people abusing it. If you follow the “everyone lets one car over” concept, or the “hey, an open space, let me slide in” it is fine. The issue is no one does. They all fly into the merge at 2-3x the speed of the “slow lane” and try to jam in.

You are mistaken about what the term “zipper merger” means. It does NOT mean letting an ass fly past stopped traffic to merge in at the last second. That is the exact conduct it is trying to alleviate. The zipper merge is just allowing people to move into your lane at a proper time to minimize reductions in speed.
