It's not like this was ever an actual election, CoD being popular doesn't stop other games from being developed released. Every year I don't buy CoD and every year I find other games to enjoy.

If you are a firm believer in playing something else if you don't like it, why don't you read something else when you don't like someone's criticism? That analogy doesn't work as a lot of people have criticized McDonalds for having a very unhealthy menu and McD's response to this is to include (somewhat) healthier options in their offerings.
