I wholly agree. But the arguments everyone is putting forth is “if a perfect duplicate can be made”. I work with what I’m given.

If the duplicate is imperfect, then the debate might be different. Plus, everyone is making the point of duplicates concurrent with the original. That is not what is being discussed as per

Well, to be clear and going back to the precepts of the article, the original’s brain will be preserved in a chemical bath, plasticized then sliced into thin pieces to be scanned into a computer, just so we can create a perfect copy to be uploaded into a new body. Pretty sure the original is dead dead at this point.

If

Well, we found some common ground, at least. That’s always nice. Despite having different viewpoints on the matter, I’m glad we could have a discussion that didn’t devolve into a flame war. I’m sorry that the debate made you weary; that’s never my intention.

In any case, have a good night. Let’s both dream of our

Yep, you’re getting at Cloning Blues. As long as the original didn’t suffer and was destroyed instantly, I have no problem with it. With your scenario, of course I’d have a problem with it, because you’re causing needless suffering to a conscious being, one that I (as well as my clone) could directly relate to.

Hah, I tend to agree.

Tangent: Have you ever played the game SOMA? It deals with this at a very respectable level. I highly recommend checking out the spoilers for the game, as well as youtubing the end level in order to see the implications of our debate.

On the subject: I would have a problem with my own argument if there was such a

If the copy is an exact copy of me and there is no such thing as an immortal soul— that conciousness and identity are solely based off the particular arrangement of physical brain cells and meat packed in my skull case— then yes, sign me up. As long as my copy and those who interact with me cannot tell the difference

I think these arguments matter only if you believe that there is somehow a unique “soul” per body. If there is only one soul per body, then yes, I imagine it would be distressing to know that there is a copy somehow masquerading as myself— I would agree with you.

But if Irishish.person (1) is a perfect copy of you, how will that copy know it’s not the original Irishish (other than people telling you you’re not the original)? How does a perfect copy know that it’s not the original, if the duplication is flawless?

Actually, you might be right. I finally thought to google “joint compound sculpture and it returned a lot of creative work by other people. He’s talented, but clearly not the only artist working with the stuff.

I remember first seeing “The Microchip” on the cover of a National Geographic that my family subscribed to, back in the day. Time flies and tech gets more incredible by the day. I feel ya.

You know, I’m hoping this turns Superman into Ultraman.

First book I thought of too, while reading this! Great recommendation.

Having dressed up for a con myself once, it was for the pure enjoyment of it. It’s like Halloween and seeing who has the best costume.

I’m surprised there’s no Japanese companies attempting to create vat grown Tuna. Get that right and we won’t have to worry about overfishing the oceans to death— not to mention saving a ton on sushi/sashimi.

Also: Mmmmm... Toro...

In my will, any inheritors of my estate get theirs when they turn 30. It’s to make sure that they have experience working, learning the value of money, and hopefully (with certain jobs) to learn humility. Anyone who gets free money earlier than that tends to nose dive into affluenza/douche-nozzle territory.

Actually, I think the sculpt is closer to some of the concept artwork for the original Star Wars. You can do an image search, but here are some samples:

I think I’d be more disturbed (than I already am) shooting the heads off of attractive people in Fallout 4. I mean, I’m doing the whole sniper route. It would bother me if every villainess looked like the headline pic above.
