So you have enjoyed, and possibly even loved, every film released theatrically by Paul Thomas Anderson (even Inherent Vice?), but you might not see his new one because of two cuts in a HAIM video?

I felt like that watching Dunkirk in theaters. The fly by’s by the planes were deafening.
So he was asked a question and answered it by saying essentially what you said above and that’s ‘sour grapes’?
I quite liked it, but opinions vary and that’s cool. The only thing I wanted to get into was that, as a librarian, the destroyed records really hit home to me and didn’t seem all that unlikely. Digital preservation is a huge issue; it’s so much more difficult and so much more vulnerable than most people think.
Shape of Water was a much lower budget film, though. That was an art house release from the start: Blade Runner 2049 was pushed as a major release and didn’t attract a huge audience.
I love this guy so much that I bought Blade Runner 2049 on Blu Ray without having seen it simply because he directed it.
For the second year in a row, Denis Villeneuve made my favorite movie of the year. It’s not an Oscar, but it’s still a pretty high honor.
I really loved this movie and it’s a massive bummer that it did so poorly. That is all.
maya rudolph usually kind of irks me, without me being able to formulate why.. but i just LOVED her here. she was just so radiant and open without ever crossing over into cartoonish or so.
His work in Phantom Thread is very subtle, and his character looks and speaks not unlike the actor himself. In other words, unlike My Left Foot and Lincoln and There Will Be Blood, it’s not a showy “watch him disappear into the character!” role.
I disagree to varying degrees about the flaws you’ve claimed but the one I disagree most with is about Luv. Sure, she didn’t get an eloquently heartbreaking speech like Roy Batty but I thought she was phenomenal and easily one of my favorite characters in a film full of colorful and interesting characters. Opinion…
Lesley Manville stole the whole entire film for me. Thank god she got nominated!
Paul Thomas Anderson writes a screenplay with a truly transcendent ending and doesn’t get shit from the Academy to show for it.
Seconded.
Robert Pattinson got robbed for Good Time. (Or I would have happily taken a supporting nom for Lost City of Z.)
There’s a real dream-like quality to the movies that came out this year. 2017 might have been a horrendous year box office wise for Hollywood, but it ironically produced some incredibly interesting films. BladeRunner 2047, Ladybird, Last Jedi, Get out, Phantom Thread, and so on. Grosses may be low, but I’m not sure…
How in God’s name did Vicky Krieps not get nominated for Phantom Thread? To me that was even more her movie than DDL’s. What an amazing, nuanced performance.
Both Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg were robbed for CMBYN. Hammer isn’t given much in the script and he does so much with subtle looks and gestures. Stuhlbarg gives life to the speech that is at the center of the book. Luca was also robbed for director, as he adds all the sensuality to it with his visuals.
The Florida Project not earning a Best Picture nomination strikes me as the biggest snub of the year, especially considering that the list didn’t even hit 10.
That’s enough heartwarming. Back to slamming the Academy for whoever I feel was deserving but got snubbed!
