Remember the prequels! “This weapon is your life!” I’m being a bit facetious invoking the prequels, but why WOULDN’T he have his lightsaber on him. We see most Jedi walking around with them at their hip. It’s like the cell phone of the Star Wars universe.

Rewatch the movie. Kylo says earlier that Rey can’t be projecting herself or otherwise the effort would kill her. Luke was stuck on the island but knew he had to project himself to distract the First Order so everybody would have time to get away. He died to save everybody else, just like Kenobi.

This new series is not any of the OT characters’ stories. They had their stories. This is for the new characters. Eventually they’ll do some side stories of Luke being a bad ass, but that does not serve this new story. It would have just been fan service.
