Coming next Monday.
I felt the show was treading water in the second-act Cam and Mitchell scenes, mostly because I couldn't buy into the premise at all. The whole thing just seemed like too much of a stretch for me, so I couldn't get invested in all the emotional swings leading up to the inevitable wacky reveal. That said, I get what…
I meant SCW. Didn't mean to demote you, Commander.
I agree, SKW. I don't know why the threads haven't been intersecting more often. It seems like the writers are more than capable of that level of craft — it's almost as if they're afraid of doing it all the time and creating an expectation that they'll always tie it all together. And I can see where they would want…
Even the C games are worth checking out, perhaps with the exception of Chroma Keys. I think this is a pretty solid lineup, actually.
You can leave suggestions here, you can email me (address is on my AVC profile page — click on my name), you can tweet me at @johnteti. I would say that the majority of reader suggestions have ended up in the column. I'll at least look into every one of them.
The most consistently clueless element throughout all of these "A.V. Club reviewers drive like this; other reviewers drive like THIS!" rants is the lack of awareness that A.V. Club reviewers tend to write for plenty of other publications. The complainer almost always states his preference for an outlet to which one or…
The surfing was the worst, which Pipedreamz captures accurately and intentionally, but not so fun-ly.
Like Donna said, solid episode, but this bugged me
Isn't Phil essentially solving Claire's problem? I know he's not the sharpest crayon in the box, but I don't see why he wouldn't just say, "As soon as I sell this terrible driver's house, she'll move somewhere else, and you won't have to worry about her anymore." I…
The question of whether a game is "worth buying" is pretty low on the list for most AV Club reviews, when games are new. We aren't writing a buyer's guide; we're trying to offer critical appraisals that, hopefully, serve as touchpoints in a larger discussion. But when Nintendo puts out a disc that offers so little new…
Interesting points. I don't think the show is functioning of a parody of itself. In fact, my impression is that it's gotten closer to the balance of seriousness and winking-ness that made those first few seasons so lively. The past couple seasons of the show had been relatively staid and lifeless. The superficial…
I wish I had thought to bring this up when we were bandying about ideas for this piece, because you're absolutely right. It was so exciting — so rare to see the game played that way. It reminded me of Ogi Ogas on Millionaire.
That's fair and well-put. It is a pretty big weekly commitment for this type of show. We may watch for slightly different reasons. I think the essence of PR's fun for me is that it treats an inherently disposable subject — amateur fashion — with deadly seriousness. It does so in a knowing, winking way (which is why it…
Sticking up for PR
I want to defend Heidi Klum et al. a little bit here. The writeup above makes it sound like, aside from That Freaking Incredible Episode, this season of Project Runway sucked overall — with the 90-minute format supposedly "dragging the entire show down with it" most weeks.
That came off as more dismissive than I intended it to be. Long story short: Your suggestion is a good one, FD.
We probably could review more Facebook games (we've just done the one, in the previous edition of Sawbuck), but yeah, it just feels like there is so much chaff to sift through — or, at least, it is more tedious to sift through the chaff on Facebook. I always feel like I'm trying to figure out what the game's "angle"…
Pops, I actually wondered if I should state the problem in that more accurate fashion, but instead I took the easy way out. I take your A-minus to heart and hang my head in shame.
Ha — you make an important point, actually. I actually thought I had included a brief note about the co-op mode, but I inadvertently cut it out at some point. That's been fixed, but to answer your question: No, you will probably get along much better when you play DKCR co-op.
Good point. I'll keep a special lookout for this type of game next time. The feedback is much appreciated.
Great reference. And no, I don't think we know whether Moriarty is gay. It seems that even the vague appearance of homosexuality messes up Sherlock's gender-identity-deduction abilities.
