Well, for the past decade, this car is possibly the WORST example for the question.

In Top Gear's X6 video at 4:19 you can see that all four wheels are spinning, so the problem is likely the performance tires that the X6 comes with are terrible off road, not the AWD system.
This is a really nifty idea and one that could lead to AWD on platforms that ordinarily wouldn't be compatible with powered rear wheels.
