I don't think anyone is faulting him for not liking the article, but entering the fray of Twitter debate at all never turns out well for the artist. I think we like to think that artists are above getting their buttons pushed by (occasionally snarky) criticism.
I suppose with that logic, though, you could defend a film from any kind of criticism just by saying "Well, it meant to do that" or "It was actually talking to this audience."
