No problem with that. There's a near kiss between Holmes and his arch nemesis in a speculation fantasy during ep.one of season three which is Moffat and Gatiss clearly tipping the wink to shippers everywhere. Very funny it is too.

James, the changes in series 3 are not subtle.

Series 3 does make all the points you mention above. And makes them crudely and bluntly because it doesn't have the leisure to do otherwise. And it only plays with the drug addict aspect: everyone thinks he's relapsed when he hasn't - a non issue and plot device, then, raised only to be dropped.
