Aliens vs Predator is a pretty cool alternative. It’s essentially the same kinds of characters in an FPS: Terran Marine, Zerg Xenomorph, and Protoss Predator.

I’m replaying the series now, and am about a third into MGS 2: Shadow Moses Redux. I think 3 did exactly what you mentioned. It expanded way too far for my liking (even though I still love the game itself), whereas 2 kept the self-containment but with a new veneer (which was the point).

I really want the same! But all of the original mechanics intact - just visual polish. Like Heather pointed out, that Ocelot fight requires a lack of updating to modern gaming sensibilities.
