I’m probably way down in the bottom minority of players who only play the single-player campaigns. I’m terrible at multiplayer because I’m just not fast enough anymore, so I can’t keep up enough to enjoy it. I just stick with the first couple of difficulties in the single-player because I really enjoy playing FPSs. I

This sentiment is very similar to “Well if you don’t like it here, you can move to another country.” It’s easy to say, “Just find another job.” It is not, however, easy to do (for a myriad of reasons others have mentioned). 

I disagree. I think it’s fair to allow a first-time cheater to come back after a certain period of exile, but with the caveat that they must play with a “scarlet letter,” so to speak - a particular attachment to their screen name, or specific “Cheater” outfit, as two examples.
