Starkiller serves a few purposes that work well enough in my mind and I think the unoriginality is part of it:

It would be the most amazing thing if it turns out the Underwoods are reptiles bent on world domination. And it would explain so much.

Yeah, but it's no fun zoning out whenever they talk about the actual politics because it's difficult (and unnecessary) to follow.

That's my biggest gripe with this season. It was entirely unnecessary to introduce yet another character!

And now with a certain someone out of the picture, they are complete unknowns who will undoubtedly bring the pain next season. I hope they team up.

Someone with more knowledge about psychological conditions should diagnose the Underwoods. Surely they're a pathological liars, and possibly suffer (profit) from narcissistic personality disorders. You aren't supposed to have empathy for him, he doesn't have good intentions, and everything he is doing is for the sake of power.
