Yeah, uh, it’s hilarious.
Yeah, uh, it’s hilarious.
I actually like the Orville...it’s kind of “Firefly on The Enterprise.”
Since this is a TV show, why not actually compare it to other sci-fi comedy TV shows? Red Dwarf, Hyperdrive, and Other Space would all like to have a word about how to parody Star Trek while still remaining funny and their own thing. And if we’re including superheroes in the mix, No Heroics, Misfits, and multiple…
Look, Seth MarFarlane is probably not too many people’s favourite person but i think his heart’s in the right place on this one. He does have a genuine affection for the genre and what Trek began as for a lot of young kids. The first episode sets a nice medium and doesn’t come off too crass so give him room to move i…
Katharine, I have been waiting for your take as it’s generally insightful (and I usually agree with it :)). But I think, like most of the pre-air reviews, you seemed to miss that this is TNG but with focus on the “middle management” “everyperson” ship that has to be the bulk of starfleet plus a view into the rooms 2…
I mean...did you actually watch the show? It’s not a parody. They didn’t properly sell it at all. It’s a tribute with blue collar jokes. It’ll find it’s way if people give it time. DS9 was damn near unwatchable early, and TNG really wasn’t that good either. Picard was a complete jackass in the first season. Comparing…
I feel like the show can turn things around if they can manage to have the two lead characters get past their previous relationship and simply become an effective team that has some history.
While the pilot didn’t immediately win me over, I have optimism in the direction the show could go. I just think it needs to find it voice right now, and strike a better balance of jokes and space drama.
I rather liked it. Its not great, but for a pilot, not bad. It’s a breezy, loving homage to TNG, with jokes. And while the humor was often weak, it was mostly character based, and not McFarlane’s usual parade-of-references shtick, so I’m hoping that as the writers and cast get a better handle on the characters, the…
I liked it! It wasn’t an hour of laughs. There were a few good chuckles, seemed like it had plenty of heart. The visuals were good.
I was waiting for the iO9 bash all day to rebut.....
I enjoyed The Orville and laughed out loud at some jokes.
I dunno; most of the negativity I’ve seen has been among critics, not viewers.
Case in point, the Rotten Tomatoes score is 17% for critics and 91% for viewers as I write this.
I liked last night’s pilot episode. It felt like a fanfic mash-up of ST:TNG and ST:DS9. Even down to the score and sound effects. I didn’t realize how much I wanted something like that until last night.
Here’s the thing: I don’t think MacFarlane intended it to be a parody. I think he meant for it to be a loving homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation, albeit with dick jokes. Compared to something like Galaxy Quest or Other Space, it’s pretty much a straight pastiche of TNG with a lot of Family Guy-style humor…
